Dear Doctor,
Allow me to share
the futurist modality—ECP with you.
Human body is a conglomeration
of complex organs made up of special cells undergoing
complex chemical changes in stride to keep body fit.
Most suffered and diseased area today is our circulatory
system of blood stream with 112, 000 kms of route
to cover which carry nutrition to each and every cell
and also acts as a garbage man and delivery boy with
60 trillion customers i.e. 17, 000 times the number
of people on earth. Even in vital organs nature has
provided plenty of collaterals. This transport system
undergoes continuous degeneration & regeneration
as is evident from the fact that arteries grows erratically
even at decaying age of 80 where abnormal arteries
supply the cancer mass and take enormous size to grow
up to little finger size.
The damage to the
intima of arteries may it be due to atheromatous plaque,
homocytiene levels, inflammation or trauma cause blockage
in the artery. As a result the victim is the vital
organ endangering the life of man. Till date, not
many solutions to identify the arterial damage and
then treatment of the same are at hand either with
pharmacy or noninvasive means. Only some success has
been achieved in case of heart, where highly invasive
procedures are adopted. In recent years, External
Counter Pulsation (ECP) has surfaced as a landmark
therapy where application in hopeless cardiac cases
like MI, CAD, CCF, Cardiogenic shock and post invasive
intervention failures / recurrences has shown its
good clinical results. Over fluid load in CCF, renal
diseases etc have been relieved with ECP due to enhanced
blood flow to kidneys. Having worked with ECP on cardiac
cases, it is seen that after few hours of treatment
a very good ventricular assist pulse is produced thereby
decreasing LV systolic effort and finally the heart
is put to rest for few hours (which can never happen
normally), eventually causing revival of myocardium.
ECP causes sheer stress
on circulatory system thereby enhancing arterial elasticity,
forced opening of the collaterals and enhanced release
of vascular endothelium growth factor like COQ2, Nitric
Oxide, Argenin and like. Its anti atherosclerotic
action, restoration of vascular endothelial dysfunction,
improved homodynamic effects have been clinically
proven now.
Apart from cardiac
applications, ECP is going to be “the therapy
of tomorrow” for angiology related disorders
viz: 1.Stroke-Paralysis 2.Cerebral Palsy 3. Ischemic
Cerebral Diseases 4.Parkinson’s Disease 5.Renal
Ischemia 6.Uremia 7.Diabetes 8.Gangrene 9.Peripheral
Vascular Disease 10.Sudden Deafness and Blindness
due to vascular origin 11.Sports Fatigue 12. Preventive
Cardiology 13.Hepatitis 14.Rheumatoid Arthritis 15.Inter-vertebral
Disc Prolapse 16. Avascular Necrosis of bones. 17.
Most of the metabolic diseases. The list is too long
but all above ailments have been treated with ECP,
in different parts of the world, with enormous clinical
success. Lot of research is demanded in these Angiology
related areas which appears to be a forgotten part
of the body yet evidently the most important.
In sum, Angiology
requires at par research & attention as like other
organs. It is worth it, since the health of all body
organs – and hence of human life largely depends
on circulatory system.
But it is possible
only if right device is selected and therapist behind
it applies ECP properly. Lastly, let me not forget
to mention that ECP his absolutely natural, harmless,
non-invasive, non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical, out
patient therapy; now approved by USA (FDA), NHS {Eng},
CE Mark Certification {Europe} and ISO {China}. ECP
has also been recognized and supported by Harrison’s
and Braunwalds’s apart from other eminent clinical
journals like The American Journal of Cardiology,
Journal of the American College of Cardiology European
Heart Journal, Journal of Investigative Medicine and
many more.
EECP - The Angina and Heart Failure Solution
The Department of Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac
Rehabilitation setup is the only solution for most of
practicing physicians and corporate hospitals for the
benefit of thousands of people who suffer needlessly
from chest pain (angina) before & after having undergone
a bypass surgery or angioplasty. Many also suffer from
excessive fatigue due to poor cardiac output function.
(heart failure) Although there exists drug therapy for
both, at times even that is inadequate. The External
Counter Pulsation (EECP) program is a unique cutting
edge therapy to improve exercise capacity, reduce
chest pain and lower the risks of living with heart
disease and heart failure.
ECP is a proven
therapy which has been shown to improve cardiac blood flow
and lower the risk of hospitalizations and mortality in patients
suffering from persistent angina and heart failure. ECP has
been FDA approved for the treatment of chronic angina and
heart failure, after massive research and trails ( MUST trial , PEECH trial)
The treatment involves
lying down on a special treatment bed and wrapping the legs
in special air filled cuffs. The cuffs are sequentially inflated
and deflated as per the patient's ECG so that blood is pumped back
to the heart and into the coronary arteries. This treatment has
been shown to be very effective in reducing anginal and heart
failure symptoms in patients suffering from heart disease in
several studies conducted around the world. We have seen similar
results using this therapy at our institute as well. The External
Counter Pulsation (ECP) device is a non-invasive treatment for
patients suffering from stable or unstable angina pectoris,
acute myocardial infarction and Cardiogenic shock.
Amazingly most of
the Indian medical faculty either not aware of this latest
development or hesitate to adopt the latest as the therapy is not very common.
450 US academic institutes and independent
physicians , Corporate hospitals in US and 13 other countries are using ECP.
To name few * Beth Israel Medical Center * The Cleveland Clinic Chain
* Columbia University * Harvard Cardiac Research Foundation
* JFK Medical Center * Johns Hopkins Medical Center * Mayo Clinic Chain
* University of California San Francisco * Yale.
In India Escorts Hospital under Dr. Trehan , Asian Heart Institute under
Dr. Ramakant Panda Cardiac Surgeon to the President of India are among the
first to install the facility apart from 50 other center in India.
I welcome you
to join hands in ushering in a new era through a modality
that is all set to revolutionize non invasive cardiac
and circulatory care.
